If you are about to go to prison, or are already in custody, you may find yourself struggling to keep your home or secure a new one for your release.

Information in this section focuses on common housing issues that you or your family may face in all stages of imprisonment – on remand, post-sentencing and approaching release.

Use the menu on the left or, alternatively, follow the links below to find out more about:

Going into prison

my home, my belongings, my benefits, where to get advice

Keeping your home

on remand, if sentenced, should I give up my home?

Homeless on release

don’t know my release date, I know my release date, homelessness tests, help if I'm homeless, selection scheme

Hostel accommodation

getting a place, paying for a hostel

Renting privately

Support in prison and beyond

With limited access to information and advice services in prison, you might think there is little you can do to improve your housing prospects. But even a small effort can make a significant difference when the time comes for you to leave prison.

If you require advice above and beyond of what is covered on the site, contact Housing Rights Service's helpline on 028 9024 5640.
