Renting from the Housing Executive
Attention: open in a new window. PrintE-mail

Renting from the Housing Executive can offer you security and is usually more affordable than renting from a private landlord. However, your choice of accommodation and your ability to leave your tenancy is restricted.

How to get Housing Executive accommodation

If you want to rent from the Housing Executive in Northern Ireland you must apply using the Selection Scheme. The Housing Executive will assess you before placing you on a waiting list for:

  • Housing Executive accommodation
  • housing association accommodation

How long you will have to wait for accommodation depends on your personal circumstances and where you want to live.

Renting from the Housing Executive

Renting from the Housing Executive has many advantages compared to renting from a private landlord or buying your own home. If you are a Housing Executive tenant you have more rights than a private tenant while usually paying less rent.

If you are a Housing Executive tenant you can:

  • pass your property to your family
  • improve your property if the Housing Executive allow it
  • buy your home at a discount

Potential problems with renting from the Housing Executive

Your choice of accommodation is limited to Housing Executive. You may have to wait if you want to move to another Housing Executive or housing association property.

It can be difficult to get permanent accommodation because the Housing Executive allocates accommodation based on your number of points on the Selection Scheme. In general, it can be difficult to get accommodation from the Housing Executive if:

  • you are not considered homeless,
  • you are single,
  • you are in good health,
  • you have no children under 16,
  • you are under 18.
