Mediation may be able to help you find a solution to your housing problem. It is not appropriate in every case but can be very effective. If your housing problem is only one issue you need to solve counselling may help you tackle some of your other issues.
Situations when mediation can help
Mediation is not appropriate in every case but it may help to find a solution to your housing problems. Mediation is best at resolving short term issues. It can be very useful for young people, couples with relationship problems or people having neighbour disputes .
The Housing Executive can provide advice and assistance if you want to use a mediation service. Contact your local Housing Executive District Office for more information or use the Advice Services Directory to find a mediation service near you.
Young people
Mediation might help if you have been told to leave home but you don't want to. If you are under 18, Social Services or a young person's agency may be able to arrange a meeting between you and your parents or carers. You can discuss your differences and may be able to come to a solution that allows you to stay in, or return to, your home.
Mediation isn't simply about helping you return home. It can also help you restore links with your family and improve relations with your family.
Couples who are splitting up
If you are experiencing difficulties in your relationship you can approach organisations such as Relate for help. Relate will work with you and your partner to try to resolve any difficulties.
If you have children and are splitting up mediation can lead to amicable arrangements about the family home and care of the children.
Neighbour disputes
If you are having a dispute with a neighbour it is a good idea to seek mediation to resolve problems before they get worse. The Housing Executive and many housing associations have access to mediation services for their tenants. Use the Advice Services Directory to find a mediation service near you.
