This page explains how you can find help and legal advice for homelessness problems. These advice services are usually available free of charge.

Finding an agency

You can search for details of local or national advice agencies using the Advice Services Directory. This provides information about local advice centres, telephone helplines and national agencies that specialise in helping specific client groups.

If you are a single person who is homeless you can contact the Simon Community 24 hours a day on 0800 171 2222.  The Simon Community will assess your circumstances and may be able to provide you with accommodation.

Contacting an agency

Contact an agency that is most convenient for you. It is best to contact the agency by telephone to find out:

  • when they are open,
  • how you can get to see an adviser.

The ways in which you can get to see an adviser can vary and include:

  • making an appointment,
  • drop in to see an adviser,
  • telephone advice,
  • home visits.

Talking to an adviser

Get advice in person if possible. You will be able to show the adviser any relevant documents that you have, for example:

  • your passport,
  • your birth certificate,
  • your driving licence,
  • your rent book or bank statement,
  • any letters you received from your landlord or the court.

Contact another agency if there is no adviser available or the times aren't convenient.

Housing Rights Service

Housing Rights Service offers free, confidential advice and assistance to anyone with a housing problem. Our advisers can:

  • tell you your rights,
  • explain your options,
  • help you decide what to do next.

Housing Rights Service can also arrange legal representation for some clients, although this is not guaranteed.

Telephone Housing Rights Service on 028 9024 5640 between 9.30am and 1.30pm Monday to Friday.

Local advice agencies

Advice agencies vary in the type of help they can give you. Some can only give basic advice and some will be able to do practical things such as telephone the Housing Executive.

Citizens Advice Bureaux

A Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) offers free, confidential and impartial advice on a range of issues. Visit the Citizens Advice website to find out more.

Police

The police can help and offer advice if you are in danger or if you are facing domestic violence, intimidation, homophobic or racist abuse.

Contact your local police station by telephone 0845 600 8000 or 999 in an emergency.
