Applying for a new home Print E-mail

You can apply to the Housing Executive as homeless if you have been intimidated. In certain circumstances you will get extra points on the waiting list because of the intimidation.

Contact a local advice agency if you have been intimidated from your home, or you are being threatened. An adviser can explain your options.

Applying as homeless

You must be living in Northern Ireland to apply as homeless to the Housing Executive. You have to complete the Housing and Transfer Application Form if you want to apply as homeless. The form is also available from your local Housing Executive office.

When completing the questions on Page 4 of the form:

  • fully explain the reasons for your homelessness in question 3a.
  • if you consider yourself homeless tick the 'YES' box in question 3b

You can get an adviser to help you complete your homelessness application form.

In most cases you should take the completed application form to your local Housing Executive District Office in person and request an interview. It is also possible to post your application. The Housing Executive has an Homeless Out of Office Hours service you can call in an emergency.

Extra help if I've been intimidated

The Housing Executive does not consider all threats to be intimidation. The intimidation must be serious and fall into certain categories. The Housing Executive will award you 200 points if it decides that you have been intimidated from your home.

You should get the 200 intimidation points if your home was destroyed in a:

  • terrorist attack
  • racial attack
  • sectarian attack
  • attack because of your sexuality
  • attack because you have a disability

The Housing Executive will also give you 200 points if you can't live in your home because of the risk of one of these types of attack.

The Housing Executive will give you intimidation points if you can produce evidence from the police to support your case. The Housing Executive can also look for evidence from:

  • local community groups
  • resident groups
  • voluntary agencies
  • health professionals

Tell the Housing Executive which agencies can help support your case.

What will happen next?

The Housing Executive should consider you homeless if it decides you have been intimidated from your home. You should be offered temporary accommodation until permanent accommodation becomes available.

If you own your home you could be eligible for the Scheme for Purchase of Evacuated Dwellings (SPED). You may also be entitled to an intimidation grant.
