Rate relief for students, trainees and care leavers Print E-mail

Rate relief scheme for students, trainees and care leavers closed on 1 December 2009. No new applications will be accepted. Rate relief scheme for students, trainees and care leavers was also know as 'ETLC relief' scheme, or Education, Training and Leaving Care relief.

How long will I be able to get this relief for?

If you were in receipt of the ETLC relief, or made an application prior to 1 December 2009, you may continue to receive it for up to three years from this date.

Your entitlement during these 3 years will not end provided that your circumstances stay the same, i.e. that:

  • you continue to live in the same property that you lived in when you applied, and
  • the property continues to be occupied by eligible persons who were in occupation prior to 1 December 2009.

If your circumstances change, you must inform Land and Property Services. They will also carry out an annual review each year to ensure that your eligibility remains unchanged.

If you are studying medicine or a similar longer course, Land and Property Services may provide extend your entitlement beyond the three year period, to ensure you get appropriate relief until your course finished.

I applied after 1 December 2009

The scheme closed on 1 December 2009. If you applied on or after this date, Land and Property Services will not be able to process your application.
