There are two agencies in Northern Ireland who can help you apply for a home improvement grant - Shelter Northern Ireland and Fold Housing Trust . You will usually only get help if you are an older person or have a disability.
Advice and assistance from these agencies is free and confidential.
Shelter Northern Ireland
Shelter Northern Ireland is a charity operating a service to assist older people and disabled people with home improvements or repairs through the Gable project. They operate in the following council areas:
- Strabane
- Derry
- Limavady
- Magherafelt
The following services are available:
- Information on grants for home improvement
- Support and help right through the grants process
- Technical advice
- Help with selecting contractors
- Help to organise building work
- Visits on site while work is progressing

Fold Housing Trust (Staying Put Department)
Fold Housing Trust is a non-profit making organisation dedicated to helping older people and disabled people within the community. Fold offers practical assistance and support to repair, adapt or improve homes in all other areas of Northern Ireland that are not covered by Gable.
Fold can act as an agent throughout the grant application relieving people of some of their responsibilities in completing the grant application. They offer the following services:
- Advice on repair and improvement of property
- Information on obtaining grants and loans
- Advice on adaptations for disabled people
- Practical help with the grants administrative process
- Technical support e.g. selecting builders
- Obtaining plans
- Technical Advice
