Housing Executive tenants are usually responsible for decorating the inside of their accommodation. However, you may get an allowance from the Housing Executive if your home has been damaged during a repair or renovation.
The Housing Executive must redecorate the outside of your accommodation at least every seven years.
When can I get a redecoration allowance?
You can only get a redecoration allowance if your home has been damaged by the Housing Executive while:
- carrying out a repair to your accommodation.
- renovating your accommodation.

How much will I get?
The amount you get from the Housing Executive depends on:
- the number of rooms damaged,
- the type of rooms damaged,
- your age,
- whether you have a disability,
- whether you are getting jobseeker's allowance or income support,
- whether it is reasonable for you to carry out the repairs yourself.
The Housing Executive will only pay the allowance after the redecoration work has been completed.
If you owe more than £300 in rent arrears the Housing Executive may use the redecoration allowance to pay some of your rent arrears. Contact a local advice agency if the Housing Executive is planning to do this.
