Housing advice for Northern Ireland

All

You'll have to renew your application every year and if you don't do this, you'll be removed from the waiting list. It's important that you keep your details up to date.

A change in your circumstances could mean you're entitled to more points. You can also lose points if your circumstances change.

When you apply for housing, the Housing Officer looking after you will check the information you've put on your application form to find out how many points you're entitled to. It's easy to get confused about points, but hopefully this video will help you understand what types of circumstances score points.

Universal Credit is a new benefit and it can be difficult to understand, even for people who have worked with benefits for years.

The Housing Executive doesn’t have to find you housing if you don’t pass all 4 homelessness tests

You can challenge a decision that you've failed a test.

You'll need to look at other housing options if you can't pass all 4 homelessness tests.

A repairs grant is available to help cover the cost of carrying out repairs required after your local council has issued a Notice of Disrepair on a protected tenancy or a Public Health Notice on any other property. You can get up to £7,500 depending on the type of work needed.

The intentionality test looks at why you are homeless.

The Housing Executive won't help if you are homeless because of

  • something you deliberately did, or
  • something you deliberately failed to do.

You can apply for social housing online at the Housing Executive's website. You may be entitled to extra help with housing if you have nowhere to live or your current home is unsuitable.

Property sales are either on a leasehold or freehold basis. When you buy a freehold property you own the property and the land it sits on. If your property is a leasehold property you’ll have to pay an annual charge, known as ground rent, to the person who owns the freehold.
