When everyone has a home

Housing advice for Northern Ireland

First things first

Getting into difficulties with your mortgage payments is easier than people think. Falling into debt is often the result of a change in your circumstances; illness, a loss of hours, a cut in overtime or relationship breakdown.  Your home can be repossessed if you fall behind on your mortgage, but getting the right help can prevent that happening.

The sooner you tackle your money situation, the better the result may be for you. The worst thing you can do is ignore the problem.

Do not wait for your lender to contact you if you are having money problems. Let your lender know if you have missed a mortgage payment of if you think this might happen soon.

There are practical things that you can if you're having difficulties paying your mortgage. The most important of these is to get advice so you fully understand your options.

When you're in debt, you need to make sure you're making the best possible use of any money coming into your home. Check to see if you're entitled to any benefits or tax credits. You could ask for extra hours at work or rent out a room in your home to increase the amount of money your household has.
