Housing advice for Northern Ireland

Bad weather

If your home has been damaged your insurance may cover the cost of repairs. Read your policy and make sure that the damage is covered. Your policy documents will tell you what to do if you need to make a claim.

If you own your home, you bear the full responsibility when something goes wrong. Make sure you have sufficient insurance cover in place to protect your home and contents in case of strong winds, snow and ice. Making sure your home is insulated and heated can reduce the risk of water damage in your home during a bad winter.

In recent years, some tenants have experienced serious problems in their properties due to extreme frost, wind and snow. There are certain actions you can take to minimise the risks to both you and your property if bad weather has been predicted.

You may be eligible for a grant if you own a property that has been flooded or is in a known flood risk area. This grant will allow homeowners to install physical barriers and equipment to help reduce the impact of flooding on their homes. Councils also provide emergency financial assistance to help with the cost of cleaning up after a flood.
