Housing advice for Northern Ireland

Homeless

The Housing Executive has a legal responsibility to help homeless people. The amount of help you're entitled to depends on whether you pass 4 homelessness. The tests look at whether you are homeless, why you are homeless, whether you're entitled to help and whether you're in greater need of help than other people.

If the Chancery Master grants your lender possession, the lender has to apply to the Enforcement of Judgments Office to enforce the court's decision. Even at this late stage, you may be able to avoid having to leave your home if you can come up with a realistic proposal of repaying the money owed.

The Housing Executive is the organisation that is legally responsible for helping homeless people and preventing homelessness in Northern Ireland.

Certain people cannot get help with housing because their immigration status does not allow this. Get advice if you've been told that you can't get help with housing because of your immigration status.

The homelessness test is one of 4 tests you have to pass to be legally homeless.

The other tests are eligibility, priority need and intentionality.

You can ask for a review of certain decisions made by the Housing Executive.

A review means that a more senior member of staff checks the original decision. They can

  • agree with the original decision, or
  • change the original decision.

It's best to get an adviser to help you ask for a review.

The Housing Executive has a number of legal responsibilities surrounding homelessness. It provides advice and assistance to people who are homeless and, in some cases, is legally required to provide temporary and permanent accommodation to people.

You might not get help with housing if you have a history of "unacceptable behaviour".

Priority need is one of 4 tests you have to pass to be legally homeless. The Housing Executive has to help you with housing if you pass all 4 tests.
